To participate in the choir, knowledge of music is not necessary, only a correct voice and creative mood. In any case, musical knowledge is highly desirable!

At the beginning of each academic year there is a general planning, which includes collaborations and concerts of the choir at the University, in Thessaloniki and in other Greek cities, with Greek and foreign repertoire.

New members are registered regularly at the beginning of each semester (September / February), but also at any time of the year. A prerequisite is to combine them with the immediate programming of the choir.

Under the new choir regulations, people over the age of 65 cannot register as choir members.

Rehearsals / Auditions

The rehearsals of the choir are open to anyone who would like to see, hear and be informed about it immediately. The rehearsals of the choir take place with regular planning every Tuesday and Thursday, at 19.30-21.45 in the hall of the Music Department of the University Student Club of AUTh. (Upper Club, to the left of the Café entrance).

Obligations of members

Requirements from the active members of the choir:

  • To be punctual in the regular and unprogrammed rehearsals of the choir

Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding the structure and operation of the choir, the ways of participating in it, its events and its presence on social media and the internet in general.

We believe that we solve most of your questions and help you understand who we are and what we do. If you have an unanswered question, see next for more information.

The choir is named after its founder, Giannis Mantaka, who started it in 1953 as a student at the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The choir is not private. It belongs to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and its purpose is to promote the cultural activities of the University.

It is not professional, in the sense that choir members are not paid. In terms of level, however, it competes with many professional choirs in Greece and abroad.

The choir "covers" musically the events of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra and the other choirs of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Choir of the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Choir "Trisevgeni Kalokyri").

At the same time, it participates in events co-organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as in collaborations with symphony orchestras of the city (Thessaloniki State Orchestra, Thessaloniki Municipality Orchestra, MOYSA) for the upload of large and remarkable musical works.

Yes, in collaboration with choirs from other universities around the world. or in collaboration with the European Choral Association (Europa Cantat festival).

The most basic "requirement" is a love of music. Some musical knowledge (eg reading a score) is desirable but not necessary. You must also be under 65 to register as a new member.

First you have to go through an audition by the conductor of the choir. The auditions take place at the beginning of each academic year (beginning of September), but also during the year, as long as they do not create a problem in the planning of the choir events.

After auditioning and placing yourself in a voice, you start attending the rehearsals normally.

According to the current program, the rehearsals take place every Tuesday and Thursday, 19: 30-21: 45, at the Ano Student Club of Thessaloniki, on the 3rd floor (next to the Café of the Club).

In case of a concert, the conductor decides on the number of extra rehearsals that will be needed, as well as the place where they will be held.

Participation in the choir is free. You do not have to pay to attend rehearsals or concerts. At the same time, it is understood that your participation in the concerts and events of the choir is unpaid.

Be punctual and formal in your rehearsals, watch the conductor and be able to perform correctly and clearly your own part in the work presented.

No. The pronunciation and recitation of the text of a musical work is learned each time by the conductor or by performers specializing in the respective language. However, it is good to have some "hearings" in foreign languages to help in learning a project faster.

No. As mentioned above, participation in the choir is completely free and no subscription is required.

Along with the choir, the Association "Friends of the Choir 'Giannis Mantakas' of AUTh" operates, with the aim of strengthening the actions of the choir (participation in concerts abroad, collaboration with famous conductors, soloists, etc.), as well as and the promotion of other activities besides concerts, such as music symposia, excursions, guided tours and tours on music topics, etc.

For more information, see the official website of the Association.

All the necessary material is supplied by the conductor of the choir. You get printed scores for the musical works you will learn, as well as informative e-mails with links to video and audio files.

At the same time, on the choir's website there is a special section for choir members, in which, in addition to information on rehearsals and future events, you can find a detailed repertoire of the choir's musical works, with full scores in electronic format (PDF), video tutorial , audio files, as well as historical data and information about each musical work.

Once your participation in the choir has been approved by the conductor, you receive a username and password, which you use to log in to the members section.

ATTENTION: The username and password are strictly personal. They are not transferable, they are not assigned to third parties, and their use is not allowed by non-members of the choir. In case a violation of the above terms is found, their validity is canceled immediately.
